Singer Mac Powell, with Mark Lee on guitar (both of whom were the only consistent musicians), and Billy Wilkins formed the band. With Billy Wilkins on piano as well as August McCoy on guitar, teenagers Mac Powell and Mark Lee created Third Day as a Christian ensemble in 1991. The next year, McCoy left to pursue higher education. Third Day played alongside the Bullard Family Singers, which included David Carr as well as Tai Anderson, at a Lee’s Church concert in 1992. The demo was released on CD and cassette in 1,000 copies. While performing at the Strand Theater in Marietta, the group was offered a deal with Gray Dot Records, a newly established record label. The group sold over 20,000 copies of the ‘Third Day’ album. Reunion Records picked out the band’s Gray Dot deal and inked them to a multi-record agreement soon after.Shortly before the farewell tour of the band in May and June 2018, drummer David Carr was the last musician to leave. The title of the band is a play on the religious recounts of Jesus’ resurrection on the third day after his execution. On September 19, 2009, the band was honored by being inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame.
