About Hokusai Katsushika Hokusai, or as he was popularly known, Hokusai, was an icon of Japanese art born on October 31, 1760.Hokusai is widely known as the originator of the famous series ‘Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji’, which famously includes the print ‘The Great Wave of Kanagawa’ created in the 1820s. It is believed that various styles of Chinese painting and painters like Sesshu influenced the work of Hokusai.Although Hokusai gained recognition for his work in woodblock prints, the Japanese artist worked in various other fields, such as making designs for book illustrations, including the famous Hokusai manga. At the same time, Hokusai also explored the fields of painting, diversifying his field of work. It is believed that Hokusai took after his father as he saw his father’s works which included a variety of designs around mirrors. During his childhood days, Hokusai was identified by the name ‘Tokitarō,’ but the names changed as Hokusai grew. Hokusai later went on to work in bookshops, libraries, and eventually as an apprentice to a woodcarver.
