Williams guided the American University team to a number of NIT berths before making a return to Boston college in 1982, leading them to two appearances in the NCAA tournament, as well as one appearance in NIT. In 1986, Gary Williams became the head coach for Ohio State.In 1989, Gary Williams returned as the head coach of his alma mater, the University of Maryland, where he rebuilt the sports program for basketball entirely from scratch.
